BRING CHILDREN FROM STREETS
Katanga Nursery School was founded to provide free early childhood education to some of Uganda’s most vulnerable children. Situated in the Katanga slums, the school offers orphaned and disadvantaged children a safe and nurturing environment where they can begin their educational journey. Beyond academics, the school ensures the children’s well-being by giving them daily care, opportunities to play, and a nutritious hot meal every day. This combination of learning, safety, and nutrition makes the school a critical lifeline for children who would otherwise have no access to such opportunities.
The school is located in the Katanga slum of Kampala, Uganda’s capital city, where thousands of people live under extremely challenging conditions. For children in this community, Katanga Nursery School represents the only real chance to learn to read, write, and count. The support extends beyond preschool; BCFSU also covers the costs of further education for children who continue their studies outside Katanga after completing nursery. The school currently operates through modest facilities, financed by sponsorships, donations from schools and kindergartens, and contributions from companies and individuals.
The school’s main goal is to provide disadvantaged children with a strong educational foundation, hope, and dignity despite their difficult circumstances. Its mission is to break barriers by ensuring that poverty does not prevent a child from accessing education. Sustenance of the school depends on continued sponsorships and partnerships, and BCFSU has a long-term plan to build a larger, better-equipped school in Katanga to reach even more children in need. With this vision, Katanga Nursery School remains a cornerstone of hope for the community.
Katanga Nursery School has objectives that focus on early learning, care, and long-term opportunities for disadvantaged children. The school aims to provide a safe and nurturing environment where children can develop foundational skills, receive daily care, and enjoy a nutritious meal. By doing so, the school seeks to break the cycle of poverty and open doors to further education and a brighter future for each child.
The expected impact of Katanga Nursery School is to change the trajectory of children’s lives in one of Uganda’s most disadvantaged communities. By giving children a safe place to learn and grow, the school helps them build the confidence and skills necessary for future education. The provision of meals improves health and concentration, while access to education breaks the cycle of poverty and hopelessness. Over time, the school’s work will empower children to rise above their circumstances, create opportunities for themselves, and contribute positively to their communities.
